VLV20! Day 0: Tiki Time

You read that right. Yes, I am starting with day zero! Haha. My husband and I, along with a couple of our good friends, flew into Las Vegas, Nevada for the 20th Anniversary of Viva Las Vegas this past week. If you are not sure what VLV is, I highly recommend checking out my posts from the last VLV we attended which was VLV18.

This year we decided to go big and arrive 1 day prior to the events and depart a day after the festivities ended. I am SO glad we did! Every day was 100% worth it! Let’s jump right into Day 0. Can you tell we were excited? : P

We flew Southwest Airlines for 3 main reasons; 1) Good price, 2) Good flight times, 3) 2 free checked bags and when you are going to a 4 day long fashion extravaganza, honey, you are going to need them!

First order of business was Frankie’s Tiki Room! One of the best spots for strong drinks, Frankie’s is known to get pretty packed when the rockabilly crowd comes to town. We made a point to stop there the night before hoping to avoid some of the crowd!IMG_5057

His amazing vintage shirt was $20 on Etsy, and my super comfy leopard dress was $17 on Amazon! Bangles were thrifted for around $2 a piece and hair flowers were $3 for a bunch at Jo-Ann Fabrics, simply attached with bobby pins. Skull earrings were gifted to me by my love a few years back.ย Check out our amazing souvenir mugs from the night!

Check back in a couple of days to see what trouble we got ourselves into on Thursday! Hint: There were some Marilyn moments…

The weekend is just getting started ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tiki/Luau Engagement Shin-dig

This last weekend was absolutely wonderful! Our friends are the best. We felt so loved at our engagement party Saturday, I can’t even describe it.

On Saturday, Tanner and I packed up Peggy Sue and headed on out to throw an engagement party at Sellwood Park in Portland. We originally were looking at wineries and other venues, but once we had our Tiki/Luau theme, we knew this needed to happen outdoors, and as per the usual, needed to be affordable. For around $75 we were able to reserve a park space through Portland Parks & Recreation.

I purchased all my decorations from the Dollar Tree, which ended up costing less than $30 to decorate 6 picnic tables. I then grabbed a bunch of leis from The Party Spotย at about $0.75 each. A day or 2 before the big event Iย found another 15 leis at a garage sale for a whopping $0.75 total!

We made the event a potluck so we wouldn’t have to deal with catering costs, and let me tell you….our friends are SPECTACULAR cooks! I posted a bunch of Luau recipes for people to use if they felt like it, (thanks to the amazing help of my Hawaiian friend!). Each guest could then call dibs on one of them or just let me know what they would like to bring and I would add it to the list. The spread was amazing; Kahlua Pork, Shoyu Chicken, Pineapple Upside-down Cake, Spam Musubi….soooo good.

Tanner made macaroni salad and I made a banana upside-down cake, as well as,ย a pineapple upside-down cake. I also mixed up some strawberry and kiwi lemonade.ย Another bonus was that with the picnic space permit beer and wine was permitted as long as it was BYOB.

As for entertainment, our friends brought ladder golf, a Frisbee, a soccer ball and a football, and we brought corn hole.

The total cost for our Party was around $200, and with so many amazing photos from that day…I think it was a success ; )

It was a good Saturday,

Bridesmaids: The Kahlua Cutie

The sweetest girl you will ever meet, Miss Kahlua Cutie has been there for all my wacky adventures from day 1! Whether itโ€™s going to a Muppet themed burlesque show or having a โ€œfatโ€ day consisting of a whole pack of bacon, 3 bottles of champagne and a โ€œSex and the Cityโ€ marathon, this girl is always down. Now Iโ€™m here to share her adorable, down-a$$-b*tch self with you. Enjoy!

  1. How would you describe yourself?

I’m a Hawai’i girl, who relocated to Oregon in 2009. I graduated in Civil Engineering, and now I’m a Field Engineer on the Sellwood Bridge Project. In my free time, I enjoy playing soccer, hiking and going running (currently training for Hood to Coast and the Portland Marathon, yikes!). I also love trying new food that pops up around Portland, and going out to see some of my favorite bands playing live downtown (the last show I saw was Of Monsters & Men at The Roseland… and it was amazing!). As much as I enjoy being out and about, I equally enjoy some quality time at home, curled up on the couch catching up on my favorite TV shows or reading a good book.

  1. How did you meet Pennywise?

We met during my junior year of college – that was… 3 years ago. My boyfriend was actually roommates with both her and her [at the time] boyfriend – how lucky was I?! I quickly became their unofficial 4th roommate.

Dress: Tropical Temptress Dress by Pinup Girl Clothing

  1. What is your favorite memory of the two of you?

Where do I even begin? Some of the best memories I have involved this girl by my side! Out of all the memories I have to say the one that tops it all off is our Booty Basement night. Booty Basement is a dance that happens once a month at a club in Portland called Holocene, and if the name didn’t give it away already, it’s a night where booties are rockin’ everywhere! Now, let me just pre-curser this by saying…. I do not, or will not ever have rhythm. The night started off with drinks at my apartment and some YouTube videos, where Pennywise, one of our friends, (and not to mention my own boyfriend!) tried to give me tips on how to twerk. Needless to say, with enough drinks in all of us by the end of the night, we had ended up on stage, with my “close-enough” twerking. Withoutย Pennywiseย wanting to go to this crazy thing, I couldn’t have even imagined this awesome night happening.

Swimsuit: Miss Cuties

  1. How was it being Pin-up-ified?

It was a blast! I’ve always loved her style & confidence from the day we met, and it was awesome to get my hair and make-up done. A bonus was having one of your best friends in charge of the photoshoot which makes everything 100x more fun (especially for a noob like me).

Pineapples: Safeway ; )

  1. What are you most looking forward to in this wedding?

What I’m looking forward to the most is being able to share such a special day with two of the most amazing humans I know. Not to mention, more pin-up hair, make-up, dresses, and the Liberty Creeeeeek (A really cheap and delicious cabernet sauvignon <– Click here for more info)! I already know it’s gonna be a party!

Special thanks to my bridesmaid-hottie-bestie! Until next week,

-Pennywise
