Grease Inspired: A Sandy Shoot

I have always wanted to do a Sandy inspired photo shoot, from the 1978, 50’s styled classic Grease, and just the other day I realized while folding my laundry, that I in fact had all the wardrobe pieces I would need in order to get the theme across! That is when I ask my husband if he would be interested in shooting some quick photos over the weekend. He was game, so that Saturday off we went to find some bleachers!

Her is my wardrobe break down:

  • Faux Leather Jacket: $12 Sears
  • Leggings: ~$10 years ago at Forever21
  • Off the shoulder Pinup Girl Clothing top: $10 Thrifted
  • Belt: Came on another dress
  • Shoes: $8 Thrifted

For a quick idea and ~45 min on a football field, I am pretty happy with how it all turned out!

Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 4

When we attended VLV18, we didn’t realize what we were missing that Sunday and final day of the Rockabilly Weekender. In our minds it was, “we should get back to work” and “it’s just a pool party?! What is the big whoop?” Little did we know that we were missing out on one of the funnest days around!

The VLV pool party on Sunday is the perfect place to wind down your weekend. There are bands, swimsuit competitions, fashion & people watching galore! All the while, you sit in the sunshine and soak your sore dancing feet in the pool. This year, we made sure not to miss it!

IMG_5229

My suit was a vintage eBay find for $20 and my husband is wearing another $20 vintage score from Etsy. My suit is so structured, I hang it in my closet! Haha. His shorts on the other hand are just fine in a drawer.

The view behind us is just a tiny portion of the crowd. We arrived a little after 10am and stood in line for about 40min before getting into the pool area. While it was a long wait, it was totally worth it!

IMG_5233

As you can see my love Courtney forgot sunscreen the previous day! Ooops! haha. After getting our fill of sunshine, we changed and headed back to the Orleans for dinner, bands and the jiving contest!

The lighting was so horrible in this photo, I had to make it black and white! Don’t worry, you will be able to see this amazing vintage copper star print dress in all her glory a little later on! (Etsy find for $50)

IMG_5305_EDIT

Through out the night, we ran into some amazingly talented people! One,Β Miss Rockabilly Ruby who is known for her incredible hair styling. I was fortunate enough to be one of her hair models at a Portland class she held a while back. She is so sweet and has such a great style! Just look at this amazing zebra print jumpsuit!?!

IMG_5261_EDIT

The second person we got the chance to chat with was Lance Lipinsky from Lance Lipinsky & the Lovers. We saw them play the night of Burlesque Bingo, and hot damn! That man has stage presence!

IMG_5310

It was such a great way to end the weekend! Now, you will have to excuse me while I go plan for VLV21…

Stay pennywise!

Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 3

Saturday is all about beautiful cars, music and pinups. I absolutely LOVE attending car shows and Viva has one of the very best! The car show boasts of over 800, pre-63 vehicles so you know it’s good! Here are a few of our favorites, of course starting with the VLV car!

IMG_5217_EDIT

Followed by my husband’s favorite of the day.

IMG_5185_EDIT

Finally this beauty!

IMG_5281_EDIT

One of the highlights of the car show is the pinup contest. Contestants are selected in a few different ways. 1) Judges choice, 2) Contestants choice and 3) People choice through online voting. The coolest part of this contest to me, is how international it is! Pinups from all over the world fly in to take part. This years winner was the beautiful Miss Monique Sweet from New Zealand.

IMG_5314

As you can see, style is a HUGE part of Viva Las Vegas and one of the best parts of my weekend was meeting Jasmin of Vintage Vandalizm.Β She is such a style inspiration and was so sweet in person!

IMG_5204_EDIT

As for my car show style, I bought this vintage 2 piece off Etsy for $30. Unfortunately I should have practiced more flattering poses in it! πŸ˜› Haha! Oh well. It was comfortable, funky and I loved the print!

Thanks for reading & stop back by for the final day of VLV20 featuring one wild pool party! See you soon!

Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 2

Good grief! Day 2 was a damn early one! One of the highlights of Viva Las Vegas 20 was the burlesque showcase headliner Dita Von Teese. If you don’t happen to know who she is, I suggest a google search…buuuuuut maybe not on your work computer. πŸ˜‰

A group of friends and I saw Ms.Teese perform in Portland Oregon last year and were absolutely enamored! As one of the foremost names in the burlesque world, she draws a crowd and Viva was no exception! Tickets for the 3 showtimes were to be handed out Friday morning, and as 100% of the entertainment is included in the High Roller tickets for VLV, these tickets were basically free… or at least already paid for!

I knew there was going to be a line so we planned on getting up bright and early, but nothing, not even college football student ticket lines prepared me for this! Luckily our friend Dan work up extra early and made it in line by 6:45am with cronuts in hand. The rest of our group met up with him at 7am.

IMG_5123

By the time the tickets began being released at 9am, the line had wrapped its way down a massive breezeway two times over, and throughout the ENTIRE Orleans casino! There were so many in line that people that lined up even a little before 9am were out of luck. We on the other hand were able to get our first choice of showtimes and great seats thanks to the early wake up call, but until then we needed a nap ASAP!..zzzzZZZZZZZ.

After a few hours of rest, we spent the day at the bowling tournament, where Ian bowled his best game ever and kept us, (The Portland Pussies), in the running longer than any of us thought possible! Our locally screen printed team shirts were a hit! Haha. Even earned us a few rounds of beer from admirers!

After doing a little shopping and visiting the strip once more, we got ready and headed to the show. Too. Much. Fun.

  • Shoes: ~$20 Amazon
  • Purse: ~ $10 Vintage
  • Necklace & Earring Set: A gift from Tanner’s Grandmother, which she wore when she was my age!

Head on back for Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 3 for one of the best car shows in the country, a first-rate pinup contest and when I met one of my favorite style inspirations! See you soon!

Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 1

My husband and I, along with a couple of our good friends, flew into Las Vegas, Nevada for the 20th Anniversary of Viva Las Vegas this past week. If you are not sure what VLV is, I highly recommend checking out my posts from the last VLV we attended which was VLV18. For me, Christmas comes in April.

We flew Southwest Airlines for 3 main reasons; 1) Good price, 2) Good flight times, 3) 2 free checked bags and when you are going to a 4 day long fashion extravaganza, honey, you are going to need them! We arrived the night before the festivities to make sure we were well rested and ready for the amazing long weekend ahead…or at least sort of πŸ˜‰

Official Day 1…

We decided to start the day off with a late breakfast and walk along the strip to take in all the sights. My husband and I had only been to Las Vegas one other time, and that was for VLV of course! ;P That trip was spent mostly at the event, so taking in the endless casino’s and a few of us trying out the mobile booze was an interesting change of pace, but daaauuuummmmnn…..it was windy!

IMG_5101

I about had to turn my amazing $20 vintage dress into a diaper to keep from having Marilyn Monroe moments if you know what I’m saying! Besides the intense wind, it really was a beautiful day.

IMG_5104

After we had our fill we went back to the hotel, attended to our blisters, and got ready for the evening’s festivities. Tonight was burlesque bingo!

IMG_5113

You heard that right. During individual burlesque performances wherever the clothing lands decides what number gets called out! Bet ya won’t see that at your local community center!

It was such a blast and we ended the evening listening to Lance Lipinsky & The Lovers who absolutely killed it! (Make note of that name because he will be coming back later on in our VLV20 adventure.) I’ll leave you now with a quick Pennywise Outfit of the Night recap:

IMG_5125

  • Dress: $56 Vintage find on Etsy
  • Shoes: Steve Madden from forever ago!
  • Tiny Party Purse: $10 at ROSS Dress for Less
  • Necklace: Vintage purchase in high school. I believe it was ~$12.

See you right back here for Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 2, which will include Dita von Teese and some Cronuts. πŸ™‚

A Le Keux Cosmetics Review

A couple months back I was approached by Le Keux Cosmetics asking if I would be interested in being a brand ambassador.Β Let me begin by saying I was completely flattered! I loved the brand that I mainly knew from the salon and Diablo Rose, so when I found out they had a makeup line I was all ears!

lekeux_cosmetics_logo

Here is how it worked:

  1. If I was interested I would get a one time code for 50% off MSRP of the cosmetics to go ahead and try.
  2. I couldΒ review the ordered products through any social media channel I desired.
  3. I then could give my readers a personalized 10% off code that they could use to order products. That code would also give me 10% of the sales back.

Sounded pretty great, so I went ahead and signed up. Over the last couple of months I have thoroughly tested 3 of the adorably packaged products:

1.Β Black Cadillac Eye Liner PaintΒ : ~$16 USD

Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint

2.Β Lip Paint in shade Cherry BombΒ : ~$16 USD

3.Β Lip Paint in shade Whistle BaitΒ : ~$16 USD

Whistle Bait Lip Paint

The Tests:

I decided to really put it to the test and line one eye with the Cadillac and the other with my favorite NYX Matte Liquid Liner.

Here is what they looked like at the beginning of the day. Both photos are completely unfiltered and I do not have any mascara on at this point. (Yes, I went out like this. I hardcore test. All environmental conditions the same.) I will say that the Cadillac never gets quite as dark as my NYX liner.

img_1166

The Results: Liner

This is where I was conflicted. Of course I wanted to rave and rant about how amazing everything was! I mean that is what most pinups do right? Promote things? Well, I just couldn’t do that with the Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint. Here it is unfiltered, (besides black and white so you can really see the wear). The Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint has completely worn off on my lid above my lashes, but the drawn out point has stayed nicely.

Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint Results

I think that this liner paint is really affected by body heat and oils in comparison to my usual NYX Matte Liquid Liner. Unfortunately this one was a no-go for me after 4 separate tries.

The Results: Lip Paints

As for the Lip Paints, I really LOVE them! They are not like a lipstick, so beware. It takes quite a bit of product to reach a deep saturation like the ones in the ads, but I have found they are a perfect winter lippy. Just as with the rest of my skin, my lips get extremelyΒ dry in the winter time and I have a hard time finding a lip color that wont dry them out even further. I also really hate straight lip glosses. It’s a texture thing. These lip paints are the perfect recipe of hydration and color for the winter. You do need to re-apply a few times a day, but I believe they are worth it. I would definitely buy the Le Keux Cosmetics Lip Paints in the future. Here are a few photos of me wearing the paints.

If you would like to try any of these lip paints out or any of their other adorable products, feel free to use PENNYLAPECHE10. We will each get a deal out of it Β πŸ˜‰ Until next time…

My 1st Pinup Shoot!

A few months ago, in the perfect sense of the word irony, I was contacted by one of my past models who told me she loved my look and was wondering if I was interested in modeling a pinup shoot for her. Crazy right?! It sounded fun, as I had never done a pinup shoot before, but I did have the wedding coming up so I told her I really couldn’t think about planning anything else at that point in time. We decided the best thing to do would be to get in touch after the big day.

After the wedding (and a few business trips later!), with a 2nd place win in my first ever pinup competition, I was ready to commit. Deedra of Deedra Stephens Photography gave me some inspiration photos and I went to work curating the perfect pinup outfits. I was SOOO nervous! If you have read my previous post on the pinup competition then you know that even though I have been ‘living’ pinup for years, the only pinup photos I have taken thus far were done by me (with my iPhone) for this blog and my @thepennywisepinup Instagram account!

What if I sucked?! How embarrassing would that be? “Meet Penny la Peche! the un-pinupable pinup!” Sounds like a sideshow attraction, don’t ya think?Β The entire night leading up to the shoot I was nauseous as all hell. I lit my favorite Yankee candle and went to work setting my curls, packing my wardrobe and digging out my falsies.

The next morning I woke bright and early. When it comes to my hair, I leave it in the curls for as long as absolutely possible! My normal primping routine goes something like this…

  1. Set Hair (Either the night before or heat set the morning of and pin.)
  2. Do Make-up (No lips! Your hair will most likely get stuck in them while styling if you do.)
  3. Do Hair
  4. Get Dressed
  5. Put on Lips (That finishing touch, ya know?)

Once I was all ready, I packed up my outfit changes, makeup and poise and headed for the location.

combo3deedra

The day went amazingly! We started out byΒ warming up in her studio. I put on some music because when I work with models it makes them much more comfortable and it sure as heck helped me! After that we headed to Blue Moon Diner.

combo1deedra

Our final location was a special request by me, Harvey Marine. This used to be a boat dealership but now is vacant of the water vessels and deals only in boat parts. Now it’s just good ol’ Harvey. A 26′ tall rabbit statue that I have been dreaming of getting shots with!Β I’m really excited with how these images turned out. Shooting with Deedra Stephens Photography was casual, comfortable and I highly recommend it!
