Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 2

Good grief! Day 2 was a damn early one! One of the highlights of Viva Las Vegas 20 was the burlesque showcase headliner Dita Von Teese. If you don’t happen to know who she is, I suggest a google search…buuuuuut maybe not on your work computer. 😉

A group of friends and I saw Ms.Teese perform in Portland Oregon last year and were absolutely enamored! As one of the foremost names in the burlesque world, she draws a crowd and Viva was no exception! Tickets for the 3 showtimes were to be handed out Friday morning, and as 100% of the entertainment is included in the High Roller tickets for VLV, these tickets were basically free… or at least already paid for!

I knew there was going to be a line so we planned on getting up bright and early, but nothing, not even college football student ticket lines prepared me for this! Luckily our friend Dan work up extra early and made it in line by 6:45am with cronuts in hand. The rest of our group met up with him at 7am.

By the time the tickets began being released at 9am, the line had wrapped its way down a massive breezeway two times over, and throughout the ENTIRE Orleans casino! There were so many in line that people that lined up even a little before 9am were out of luck. We on the other hand were able to get our first choice of showtimes and great seats thanks to the early wake up call, but until then we needed a nap ASAP!..zzzzZZZZZZZ.

After a few hours of rest, we spent the day at the bowling tournament, where Ian bowled his best game ever and kept us, (The Portland Pussies), in the running longer than any of us thought possible! Our locally screen printed team shirts were a hit! Haha. Even earned us a few rounds of beer from admirers!

After doing a little shopping and visiting the strip once more, we got ready and headed to the show. Too. Much. Fun.

Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 1

Haha a couple days! Took a bit longer than that, but I want to make sure I documented it all because it was that fantastic! Ok here goes….Official Day 1…

We decided to start the day off with a late breakfast and walk along the strip to take in all the sights. My husband and I had only been to Las Vegas one other time, and that was for VLV of course! ;P That trip was spent mostly at the event, so taking in the endless casino’s and trying out the mobile booze was an interesting change of pace, but daaauuuummmmnn…..it was windy!

IMG_5101

I about had to turn my amazing $20 vintage dress into a diaper to keep from having Marilyn Monroe moments if you know what I’m saying! Besides the intense wind, it really was a beautiful day.

IMG_5104

After we had our fill we went back to the hotel, attended to our blisters, and got ready for the evening’s festivities. Tonight was burlesque bingo!

IMG_5113

You heard that right. During individual burlesque performances wherever the clothing lands decides what number gets called out! Bet ya won’t see that at your local community center!

It was such a blast and we ended the evening listening to Lance Lipinsky & The Lovers who absolutely killed it! (Make note of that name because he will be coming back later on in our VLV20 adventure.) I’ll leave you now with a quick Pennywise Outfit of the Night recap:

IMG_5125

  • Dress: $56 Vintage find on Etsy
  • Shoes: Steve Madden from forever ago!
  • Tiny Party Purse: $10 at ROSS Dress for Less
  • Necklace: Vintage purchase in high school. I believe it was ~$12.

See you right back here for Viva Las Vegas 20: Day 2, which will include Dita von Teese and some Cronuts. 🙂

VLV20! Day 0: Tiki Time

You read that right. Yes, I am starting with day zero! Haha. My husband and I, along with a couple of our good friends, flew into Las Vegas, Nevada for the 20th Anniversary of Viva Las Vegas this past week. If you are not sure what VLV is, I highly recommend checking out my posts from the last VLV we attended which was VLV18.

This year we decided to go big and arrive 1 day prior to the events and depart a day after the festivities ended. I am SO glad we did! Every day was 100% worth it! Let’s jump right into Day 0. Can you tell we were excited? : P

IMG_5039

We flew Southwest Airlines for 3 main reasons; 1) Good price, 2) Good flight times, 3) 2 free checked bags and when you are going to a 4 day long fashion extravaganza, honey, you are going to need them!

First order of business was Frankie’s Tiki Room! One of the best spots for strong drinks, Frankie’s is known to get pretty packed when the rockabilly crowd comes to town. We made a point to stop there the night before hoping to avoid some of the crowd!IMG_5057

His amazing vintage shirt was $20 on Etsy, and my super comfy leopard dress was $17 on Amazon! Bangles were thrifted for around $2 a piece and hair flowers were $3 for a bunch at Jo-Ann Fabrics, simply attached with bobby pins. Skull earrings were gifted to me by my love a few years back. Check out our amazing souvenir mugs from the night!

It really was too much fun! Met some great people and left so excited for the upcoming weekender!

Check back in a couple of days to see what trouble we got ourselves into on Thursday! Hint: There were some Marilyn moments…

The weekend is just getting started 😉

Workout, Body Image & Mental Health

As we start approaching nicer, and nicer weather, the pressure to “look good” in a bikini begins crawling out of the shadows. I put “look good” in quotations, because it is all a matter of opinion and 99.99% of those opinions don’t flipping matter.

Growing up I was always active. I began dancing and conditioning at a very young age, which has continued, taking on various forms throughout the years. I always knew that physical activity was necessary for a healthy lifestyle, but it wasn’t until around 2 years ago that I realized for myself, it was just as mentally necessary.

Like many people, I suffer from depression. This depression has played a major roll in my life over the last 6 years. I searched high and low for a “cure.” I have tried therapists, prescriptions, natural remedies, books…Once in a while something would stick, but only for a month or so. 2 years ago I was beginning to give up hope so I decided to switch my focus to getting fit for our wedding. I said to myself if the mental isn’t cooperating, let’s try the physical. Here was my plan:

  • Get to the gym 3x per week. (Crunch is a great place that is completely pennywise! For $9.95/month you get access to not just the gym, but all fitness classes as well. I highly recommend.)
  • Each night, only 1 hour of TV unless you are working out during it. (for example crunches, weights, squats…)
  • No junk on the weekdays. Have fun on the weekends.

For me, this routine totally worked! If I had enough time to be a slug on the couch, I had enough time to do some bicep curls while I watched. I also learned during this Sweating for the Wedding adventure, that weighing myself was bullshit. I stopped weighing after 1 month when I realized I was more obsessed with a number than how much more in shape I had become.

To any one starting a workout plan. I highly suggest weighing yourself as little as possible, hopefully not at all. You are putting in the work. Don’t let a scale make you think you aren’t good enough.

The big day came and I was so happy! It was absolutely perfect. I married my high school sweetheart surrounded by the most wonderful friends and family. It was happily ever after…

Or was it?

As each week past, I found my depression had taken the front seat again. I contemplated going back through my list of tried and failed “cures” to hopefully find some sort of relief. I examined my life and realized that busy work schedules and the calm after the wedding storm had completely thrown my workout routine to the wind. I needed those endorphins again. It was amazing that something so physical could effect my mental state so intensely. Now while exercise isn’t a cure for depression, it surely has helped me with mine.

If you or someone you know has depression and hasn’t tried physical activity, give it a shot. It definitely can’t hurt. Here are a few of my favorite tools and techniques for a solid home/TV binging workout. *Please consult with your doctor before engaging in any physical activity.

Supplies: 1 yoga mat & 2 5lb weights. (Target has a solid starter yoga mat for $15 & weights for $8.49 each).

For me, motivation to exercise increases if I have a particular goal in mind. Currently I have decided on Viva las Vegas in April. No scales, no crazy diets, just exercise. Lets start with some arms…

A Vintage Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

I absolutely love this often dreaded day. It’s the colors, the candy, and more than anything…another reason to dress up!  This year I wanted to do something fun with it. I decided to recreate this adorable photo of Betty Grable from 1937.

Betty Grable 1937 Valentine's Day

I had a photographer all lined up but unfortunately timing wasn’t on our side and the shoot never came together. Luckily thanks to my forever valentine (my hubs), I was able to complete it!

img_0849_edit0213_3

2 Tutus from Amazon ($9 each), 1 velvet leotard as well ($16), and a few bits from the craft store made this costume complete. I Photoshopped the garland, along with the bow and arrow to save a few bucks.

img_3212_editsmall

We had a blast, just the two of us, and I guess that’s what Valentine’s Day is really all about… spending special moments with the ones you love.

Pardon me while I adjust ; )

Hope your V-Day is filled with all the chocolates and even more love!

Not Selling Out: An Honest Le Keux Cosmetics Review

A couple months back I was approached by Le Keux Cosmetics asking if I would be interested in being a brand ambassador. Let me begin by saying I was completely flattered! I loved the brand that I mainly knew from the salon and Diablo Rose, so when I found out they had a makeup line I was all ears!

lekeux_cosmetics_logo

Here is how it worked:

  1. If I was interested I would get a one time code for 50% off MSRP of the cosmetics to go ahead and try.
  2. I could review the ordered products through any social media channel I desired.
  3. I then could give my readers a personalized 10% off code that they could use to order products. That code would also give me 10% of the sales back.

Sounded pretty great, so I went ahead and signed up. Over the last couple of months I have thoroughly tested 3 of the adorably packaged products:

1. Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint : ~$16 USD

Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint

2. Lip Paint in shade Cherry Bomb : ~$16 USD

Cherry Bomb Lip Paint

3. Lip Paint in shade Whistle Bait : ~$16 USD

Whistle Bait Lip Paint

The Tests:

I decided to really put it to the test and line one eye with the Cadillac and the other with my favorite NYX Matte Liquid Liner.

Here is what they looked like at the beginning of the day. Both photos are completely unfiltered and I do not have any mascara on at this point. (Yes, I went out like this. I hardcore test. All environmental conditions the same.) I will say that the Cadillac never gets quite as dark as my NYX liner.

img_1166

The Results: Liner

This is where I was conflicted. Of course I wanted to rave and rant about how amazing everything was! I mean that is what most pinups do right? Promote things? Well, I just couldn’t do that with the Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint. Here it is unfiltered, (besides black and white so you can really see the wear). The Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint has completely worn off on my lid above my lashes, but the drawn out point has stayed nicely.

Black Cadillac Eye Liner Paint Results

I think that this liner paint is really affected by body heat and oils in comparison to my usual NYX Matte Liquid Liner. Unfortunately this one was a no-go for me after 4 separate tries.

The Results: Lip Paints

As for the Lip Paints, I really LOVE them! They are not like a lipstick, so beware. It takes quite a bit of product to reach a deep saturation like the ones in the ads, but I have found they are a perfect winter lippy. Just as with the rest of my skin, my lips get extremely dry in the winter time and I have a hard time finding a lip color that wont dry them out even further. I also really hate straight lip glosses. It’s a texture thing. These lip paints are the perfect recipe of hydration and color for the winter. You do need to re-apply a few times a day, but I believe they are worth it. I would definitely buy the Le Keux Cosmetics Lip Paints in the future. Here are a few photos of me wearing the paints.

Keeping dem Claws [Acrylic DIY]

If you know me, then you know if there is a surface or medium to get creative with, i’ll use it! No lack of funds will stop me!

Growing up I was always into having funky nails but I wouldn’t say obsessed. The polish took waaaaay too long to dry and it chipped after a day of me working on some other creative outlet. So it was really a love/hate relationship as you can see. Then about 2 years ago I was introduced to gel polish. It was love at first swipe ❤ Once I saw how quickly it cured under the lights and how forgiving it was to blunders, I knew I needed to invest in my own kit. $30 each session at a salon can add up quick! I decided on the Gelish Complete Starter Kit from Amazon. The one linked comes with 2 full size polishes while mine only had 2 small ones, so you are getting a better deal 😉

gelish_kit

After purchasing, I spent a time sticking to plain colors and the occasional polka-dot but soon got bored. I once again decided to make my way back to the salon and try out acrylics. I was hooked! Just check out my wedding nails by Alex at Red Carpet Nails!

View More: http://apluslphoto.pass.us/shintinwedding

Well after a number of trips to the salon and not wanting to ever go without acrylic nails again, I realized this too was too much for my budget, so back to DIY I went! I purchased the KISS French Acrylic Starter Kit from a Fred Meyer here in town. I read through the instructions and remembered back to everything I noticed the technician at the salon doing when I was in the chair. Here is how it went down…

img_0098

  1. Trimmed my natural nails down and filed them a bit to remove any left over acrylic from previous salon application.
  2. Picked out the appropriate size nail tips and glued them to each nail.
  3. Clipped each nail down to size and to make desired points.
  4. Filed to smooth points.

IMG_0099.JPG

5. I then did the acrylic application as per package instructions.

Here is how it turned out after I applied my gel polish and witch inspired nail art. Not too shabby for my first attempt!

img_9672

After this first try I learned a few things. #1 I desperately need that little dremel tool the nail techs use. I couldn’t get my nails as smooth and perfectly shaped only using hand files :/ #2 I knew I couldn’t spend $100 bucks on one. That is when I began hunting and ended up with this: AGPtEK Professional Nail file Yes, most of what I purchase comes from Amazon. We have Prime and they have everything. Nuff said.

nail-dremel

I realized I wanted adjustable speed and good user reviews. Budget was $40 or less. This guy was only $31.99 with 4 stars out of 70 reviews. SOLD! It works very, very well. The one complaint I have is that one of the tips does not fit, but for only $32 and 5 other tips to choose from, who really cares. The foot pedal I have not used and probably wont since I never need to “leave my station” as I am my only client haha. This tool leveled up my nail game 100%! The acrylic was now smooth and with the smaller tips I could get the shaping just right. Here is my second go at acrylic nails with gel polish. They go with my Halloween costume that I am so excited to reveal this upcoming Saturday!! Follow @thepennywisepinup if you want to keep up with my shenanigans in pin-up style creativity!
